So why Reeve and Cait? Why a shrine dedicated to these two characters, the latter of which many FF7 players find to be "annoying"? Quite frankly, I wonder that myself sometimes. Just what is it do I find so appealing about a toy cat, a stuffed moogle, and the Shinra executive who controls them both? Well, this much I have figured out. Unlike other character shrines, this one was not made entirely out of an admiration or a love of the character in question. Sure, I do love Reeve and his feline alter ego. However, my primary obsession with Reeve/Cait Sith comes mainly from the fact that I identify with him.
How am I like Reeve? Let me count the ways...
First off, I can identify with leading a double life, being two people whenever necessary. As many who know me online could tell you, I tend not to reveal too much of myself on the Internet, prefering relative anonyminity. Yet my internet identity is only one example of this. There's also my work identity, my family identity, etc.—many people have such multiple "selves". And as with Cait shortly before Barret reveals his true identity, sometimes they overlap, whether I want them to or not. There's also Reeve's attitude. He's generally thoughtful, but gets frustrated when people don't consider his suggestions and comments; to say I could see a trace of his temperment in myself is an understatement.
Besides those qualities, he's one of the best-looking Shinra characters and a hero to boot, aiding Cloud's crew in their quest at the expense of his own employer's. And more than any other character, he has an overwhelming sense of justice and duty. As an example, he's truly concerned about Midgar's people, as demonstrated in his arguments with Barret over AVALANCHE's actions; Midgar is Reeve's responsibility, and he won't allow Barret to forget how his group's actions led to the deaths of many innocent bystanders. Who wouldn't want to aspire to Reeveness?
I could go on, but I'm sure you'd rather get on with checking out the character shrine, so I'll cease my rambling for the time being. However, before I go, I would like to shamelessly plug my fanfics on the Blue Shinra Project, many of which prominently feature Reeve and/or Cait Sith. So sit back and relax, and take in what I've long strived to make as one of the finest FF7 character shrines on the web. Enjoy!
